Sumptous strings... strident brass... plaintive woodwinds... all led by the majestic sounds of a Steinway or Bosendorfer concert grand piano to produce three memorable collections of easy listening tunes. These albums are selections of instrumental covers of songs that I have been playing as a solo pianist for many years, before deciding to dip my toe into the world of digital multitrack recording. It has been a fascinating and highly rewarding learning curve for me, both from the technical side of the recording, mixing and mastering as well as the musical side of re-arranging the solo piano score for multiple instruments.
Over the years I have been fortunate to have been exposed to artists spanning many musical genres and influences, and these tracks reflect a diverse range of songs of varying degrees of familiarity. Included are timeless standards, such as 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' and 'Cavatina', to less well-known but still familiar tunes such as 'Somewhere Out There' and 'Let Me Try Again' - a top five hit in 1975 for Tammy Jones.
In making these albums, my goal was whilst having the piano as the predominant instrument, and incorporating a few nuggets of originality, yet to remain reasonably faithful to the original well-loved arrangements. I am also pleased to have been able to twist my son Jake’s arm to lend his guitar expertise to a couple of tracks. His lead guitar solos are on track 9 of the first album, 'A Piano Cocktail (1), and track 2 of the third album; 'A Piano Cocktail 3'.
